On Saturday August 23, 1970, 43,712 fans watched the Mets and Reds split a double header. The Mets were led by Tommie Agee’s 2 home runs and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win the 1st game 5-4. The Reds won the 2nd game 7-5 on the strength of Jimmy Stewart’s pinch 3 run home run. Gary Gentry and Tom Seaver were the starting pitchers for the Mets.
It was a rainy day at Shea and the 1st game of the double header didn’t start until after a 2 hour and 15-minute rain delay.
In the 1st game, Tommie Agee hit his 21st and 22nd home runs while Johnny Bench hit his 42nd.
After splitting this double header, the Mets were only 3 games out of first place on this date in 1970.
