The complete Ground school for preparing for the FAA private pilot exam. This option is much cheaper than the other option of taking the ground school through the local flight schools. Taking the ground school portion here ahead of enrolling in a local flight school is the smartest option to save some money and gain the required knowledge in the process of becoming a licensed private pilot.

DALLAS, N.C. - Take the first step toward earning Pilot Certification with the Private Pilot/Sport Pilot Ground School course, offered through the Gaston College Continuing Education Department. The class prepares students for the FAA pilot knowledge exam and covers aerodynamics; airplane systems; evaluating weather conditions; FAA regulations; aviation safety; navigation; incident and accident reporting requirements; and other pertinent information.
Students will take the knowledge exam at an approved FAA examination station upon completion of the class. After passing the exam, they can take the next step toward certification by attending an accredited flight school for the practical, hands-on training required to become proficient in piloting skills. Or hire a private instructor to gain the training hours needed and proficiency to pass the FAA check ride. Upon certification, private pilots can fly a variety of aircraft and travel almost anywhere in the United States, and sport pilots may fly two-seat light sport aircraft.
The class is taught by Dewey Jenkins, who is an active commercial pilot with instrument ratings, a certified flight instructor, an instrument flight instructor, and an advanced ground instructor, teaches the course. He learned to fly at the Gastonia Municipal Airport, beginning in 1965, and at one time owned a flight school at the airport. Jenkins has been teaching the class at Gaston College for over 16 years.
This class is a very enjoyable experience, and is a great place to begin no matter what you flight aspirations may be.
"The City of Gastonia has enjoyed collaborating with Gaston College to offer the Private Pilot/Sport Pilot Ground School class," said Joe Albright, Director of Enterprise Services for Gastonia. "We believe this class will be a wonderful promotion of the Gastonia Municipal Airport as well as a great opportunity for our residents interested in aviation and achieving their pilot's license."
The class meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Dalpiaz Student Success Center on the Gaston College Dallas Campus. The fee for the 72-hour course is $191.
The next class dates are undetermined until enough students have shown interest and or are registered for the course.
